A lesson that can’t be taught in a classroom.

Life gives you moments that you will remember and carry along for the rest of your time on earth.

For most, those moments are when your baby sister is born, scoring a game winner or a spontaneous road trip with your friends.

For the majority of college students involved in Love Your Melon nationwide, it is the moment when you walk through quiet hospital hallways with hundreds of beanies and endless amounts of hand sanitizer that truly stick with you.

It is the moment, when you see a priceless and irreplaceable smile on a child’s face after you tell him he gets to skip class to go on an adventure with a crew dressed as superheroes.

Donation after donation, you get introduced to the little girl who canโ€™t braid her hair anymore, and the young boy who dreams of playing on his junior football team again.

Then, it finally clicks.

Although these children don’t have energy to play tag at recess or stay up late like we can, these children are stronger than we will ever be.

Experiences through Love Your Melon helps college students appreciate life and get back to the realization that life really isnโ€™t as bad as we make it out to be; there is so much more to life than worrying about the test next Wednesday, or letting someone who doesn’t like you back ruin your week.

Some college students get upset if they canโ€™t go to the bar on Saturday due to schoolwork. While somewhere, a little girl is fighting for her life in a hospital bed, wishing she could go back to school to learn multiplication.

People find themselves in fights with their boyfriend over a text to another girl. While somewhere, all a mom prays for is for her little boy to grow old enough so she can text him when he is away at college.

We sulk and sit in a bad mood over the smallest issues, while a child somewhere has found the strength to still laugh and smile through chemo treatment.

Through events, promotion and hard work we sell beanies so these amazing kids can experience superhero moments. When in reality, they are the real superheroes that help us college students gain the most valuable lessons and moments we will experience in our lifetime.

Lessons that can’t be taught in a classroom.

This is the Love Your Melon lesson. It is so much more than a beanie.
